Adrian College now in 2nd and LSU-Shreveport moves up to 3rd

With just over seven (7) months and over twenty events now completed, Bethel University has taken over the lead in the season long quest to be crowned the best fishing team in the nation. The bass team from Adrian College drops down into second place, while Louisiana State University-Shreveport moves into the third place position.

The Bethel University Bass team has long been recognized as one of the top college fishing programs in the nation at events all over, and have often finished in the top 10 in the Cabela’s School of the Year rankings, however they’ve yet to win the hardest title in college fishing to date.

“We are very proud to be back at the top of the list for the ACA Cabela’s School of the Year. The school of the year is one of only few achievements that has alluded the Bethel Wildcat Bass Team and to win, especially with the huge amount of competition in college fishing, would be huge for our team and our program,” said Garry Mason, Coach for Bethel University.

Bethel University hadn’t fished an event since September, but reemerged in November to fish the Murray State Fall Invitational. The team of John Garrett and Brian Pahl fished the event bringing 22.90lbs to the scales and taking the win, giving them 50 points to add. With no other events taking place until the new year, it’ll be interesting to see what Bethel’s strategy will be heading into the Spring events.

“We are planning on working hard to remain on top for the rest of the season. Fishing all of the three-major tournament trails this upcoming year should help, but we must be able to keep two or three boats in the top five everywhere we go,” continued Mason. “There are some really talented teams chasing us, so we can’t let up if we are to succeed as the tournament schedule plays out. Go Bass Cats!”

Moving from first place to second place is the bass team from Adrian College. Adrian College hasn’t fished a Cabela’s School of the Year sanctioned event since September where they took first place again, after finishing first at the FLW Northern on Lake Erie. Adrian College will no doubt be a contender come Spring as the battle for the Cabela’s School of the Year presented by Abu Garcia title will heat up.

“It’s great to be off to such a good start in the SOY race, but there are a lot of events ahead and lots of work still to do. Now that the scoring has been adjusted it will definitely give mores teams the opportunity to say in the SOY hunt all year,” said Seth Borton, Coach for Adrian College.

Rounding out the top three is the bass team from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. The team fished the FLW Southern event in October, earning 102 points, which gave them the push they needed to move back up into the top three. As it stands, LSU-Shreveport is only fifteen (15) points behind current first place team, Bethel University. With the 2018’s jam-packed tournament season around the corner,  these events will be crucial in determining who stays at the top.
