Adrian College Closes out Summer on Top!

McKendree University follows in second and Bethel University in third.

The dog days of summer are here and temperatures outside are eclipsing the 100-degree mark across various parts of the country.  But the weather isn’t the only thing heating up as the calendar turns to August.  Take a quick glance at the most recent standings for the Bass Pro Shops School of the Year presented by Abu Garcia and you’ll notice the race to be college fishing’s number one school is also heating up.

Through 12 events thus far, 15 teams have earned over 2,000 total points.  For perspective, Adrian College led at this exact same point last season with just 1,500 points.  Fast forward to now and the anglers from Adrian College find themselves atop the standings once again, but this time they have 3,670 points. “The crazy thing is, this has been the trend for the last three or four years. It’s great to be in this position as it’s definitely an indication we have made the most of our opportunities thus far,” noted Seth Borton, Head Coach of the Adrian College Bass Fishing Team.

The key to Adrian’s success has been remaining consistent throughout the summer.  Of the 12 qualifying events up to this point in the season, they have earned points at a total of 10.  This most recent update contains results from eight new events to count towards a team’s total.  Adrian College won two of those events and had top 10 finishes in numerous others.  “We have had some incredible stretches starting in late spring through the summer where we have won or finished in the top five in every event we have fished,” added Borton.

Lurking within striking distance in second place is the 2018-19 School of the Year champion, McKendree University.  With 2,965 points, the defending champs trail Adrian College by roughly 700 points.  Their big leap in the standings can be credited in large part to a top five at the Bassmaster College Series Championship.  Tyler Christy and Trey Schroeder finished in fourth place with a three-day total of 50 lbs. 15 oz. to earn 970 points.  Paired with a respectable finish at an FLW Regional, that top five at a National Championship event helps McKendree move from 15th all the way up to second.

Continuing the trend of past champions looming close by in the standings, we move to the third spot.  Through the first week in August, Bethel University finds themselves sitting squarely in third place.  Bethel University is no stranger to the top of the School of the Year standings.  The 2017-18 Bass Pro Shops School of the Year presented by Abu Garcia, Bethel University has amassed 2,715 points from only three events.

Their most recent success came just last week as Cole Floyd and Carter McNeil won the Bassmaster College Series Championship.  This makes the second National Championship level event that the duo has won this summer.  In May, Floyd and McNeil won the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops on Pickwick Lake in Florence, AL.  Two months later and they sack up another great catch of Tennessee River bass to claim the B.A.S.S. title on Chickamauga Lake.  Floyd and McNeil weighed in 59 lbs. 11 oz. over three days to take home the victory.
