UAB wins Auburn’s “Bass Snow Bowl 2008”

Christmas break for most college students means time to go home, maybe make some extra money and get ready to go back to class in January. But for 32 students this years Christmas break meant pulling out the fishing rods and competing on two of Alabama’s premier waters; Lake Mitchell and Lake Jordan.

The Christmas Clash Presented by Auburn University was, “An impromptu event we

Univ. of Alabama 1st place: Rowdy Wade/Andrew Weathington     came up with at our fall classic,” said Jann Swaim, Auburn’s Bass Club Academic Advisor. The event was a two day format where anglers competed on Lake Mitchell, AL on day one (Dec. 29th) and Lake Jordan, AL on day two (Dec. 30th). Both of the famed impoundments are located on the Coosa River, which also means that they are home to one of the baddest bass that swim the Coosa River Spotted Bass. Despite a cold front that passed through just prior to the event, the anglers from 6 respective universities found the Coosa spots willing to bite, right along with their largemouth cousins.

The most popular pattern seemed to be finesse fishing. However, the top teams were mixing it up with reaction baits in the morning (spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits), and then moving to fishing bridges, docks and            Auburn Univ. 2nd place: Dennis Parker/Richard Peek           other forms of cover with jigs in the afternoon. Even though the team of Richard Peek and Dennis Parker, from the host school of Auburn, lead the first day of the event on Lake Mitchell with 14.09 pounds, they would find themselves just short of the 1st place trophy on Lake Jordan (day two). The team of Andrew Weathington and Rowdy Wade from the University of Alabama - Birmingham had a fantastic day two, with five bass that weighed 16.60 pounds. This gave them a two day total of 30.49 pounds. The Alabama - Birmingham team narrowly beat the Auburn team by less than a pound. “The event was a good time with fellowship, said Swaim. The anglers were able to get together and talk about what they got for Christmas, and these anglers love to fish and are very competitive.”

The Auburn University Bass Club will also host the 2009 Southern Collegiate Bass Fishing Series this spring. The first event of the series will be held January 23-24 on Lake Neely-Henry, AL. All collegiate bass fishing teams are welcome to compete.
