Spring Breakout Welcome

Killeen Convention & Visitors Bureau Welcomes 2009 LoneStar Spring Breakout

Collegiate anglers representing universities throughout Texas will visit Killeen, Texas March 12-14 to contest the 2009 LoneStar Spring Breakout event at Stillhouse Hollow Lake. The tournament is sanctioned by the Association of Collegiate Anglers (ACA) and will be featured on Versus this fall as part of the BoatU.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship television series. Lonestar Sports Network will also produce a 1 hour special featuring collegiate bass fishing, utilizing this event as the backdrop.

"The City of Killeen is honored to host this prestigious tournament for many reasons," stated Connie Kuehl, Director, Killeen Convention & Visitors Bureau. We recognize the economic impact resulting from our community providing the angler's needs for lodging, meals, gas, and supplies. National media exposure provides the added value of extensive positive publicity for our two beautiful lakes, Stillhouse Hollow and Belton; which many anglers may not be aware of. These magnificent lakes provide ample drinking water for our growing population as well as the recreational amenities of; fishing, boating, skiing, SCUBA, picnicking, hiking and bird watching. Two endangered bird species arrive and thrive during this time of year and watching tours are available. Our excellent location provides easy access from IH-35 and US190, great accommodations, wonderful shopping, wineries, museums, and planetarium. The Killeen Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to welcome these competitive anglers and showcase our community!"

As many as 100 collegiate anglers representing up to 15 universities are expected to compete. While prizes are awarded to the top finishers, school pride and a love of fishing are the biggest factors that drive these student athletes. The 2008 LoneStar Spring Breakout champions, Texas A&M hope to successfully defend their title.

"While many college students are headed to the beach somewhere to party during spring break, these kids will be pursuing their passion for bass fishing. These talented anglers are also fierce competitors who represent their schools with class," said Wade Middleton, Tournament Director.
