SFA JUMP STARTS 2009 BOAT U.S. COLLEGIATE BASS FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Sam Rayburn reservoir was host to the first in a series of Collegiate Bass Fishing events. Events like these will lead to the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship, which will be held this coming spring on Lake Lewisville. Thirty-five teams gathered on the famous east Texas Lake from universities as far away as Kentucky, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Arkansas. Some braved icy roads and late night drives, after taking finals, to reach their destination all to support their college bass fishing clubs.

The anglers found the water level of Sam Rayburn low for this event. The threat of morning fog made for some potential delays on day one. As luck would have it Mother Nature cooperated as the field of 70 collegiate anglers discovered that the weather played right into their hands for a great day of fishing.

The team from Tarleton State University of Tanner Morgan and Chris Michels became the front runners after the day one weigh in with a great sack of fish weighing in at 18 pounds 13 ounces. The team said that they were fishing both deep and shallow water and felt good about tomorrow

The second place team of Chip Porche and Mark Jonhson from the University of Oklahoma were the last team to arrive at Sam Rayburn. Because of finals the team was unable to practice and rolled in at the ramp at 4 a.m. on day one. However this didn’t affect their fishing as they brought in a 15 pound bag of Rayburn bass to the scales.

The 2009 series sanctioned by the Association of Collegiate Anglers will kick into high gear as registration for the 2009 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship begins in mid-January. Other upcoming regional events will be held at locations such as Lake Dardenle and Kentucky Lake leading up to the championship event at Lake Lewisville.

The 2009 series is sponsored by: BoatU.S., BoatU.S. Angler, Ranger Boats, Cabela's, American Rodsmiths, Anglers' Legacy, Abu Garcia, Aviva Fishin' Buddy, Berkley, Costa Del Mar, EPIC Sports Video Cam, Falcon FTO tackle organizers, Fenwick, Frogg Toggs, Garmin, Gemini Sport Marketing, Lago Vista Lodge, Gene Larew Lures, MotorGuide, Power-Pole, Rapala's Fishing Frenzy, Sebile, Sperry Top-Sider, TruckVault, Yamaha, City of Lewisville, Sneaky Pete's Marina.
