Collegiate anglers get bluebird Texas day as championship begins

LEWISVILLE, Texas (Sept. 27, 2007) -- As a pre-dawn thunderstorm had tournament officials watching to make sure it did indeed dance around Lake Lewisville as predicted, the 83 teams representing 48 colleges in the second annual BoatU.S. National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship (NCBFC) were thinking more about where they were going to start this first day of competition.

By 8 a.m., about one hour after take-off, all questions had been answered. The sky was clear and the anglers were fishing. By 4 p.m., the results for the first day of competition had been decided.

At the top was the University of Montevallo, Alabama, team, Casey Crumpton and Clent Davis, with their five-fish limit of bass weighing 13.24 pounds. It was just enough to edge out runners-up, Chase Cates and Christopher Snow from Louisiana Tech University, who had a 12.92 pound limit.

Rounding out the top five teams were: 3rd place, North Carolina State's Alex Freeman and Randall Hess; 4th place, Louisiana Tech University's Aaron Rogillio and Tyler Tatum; and 5th place, Texas A&M's Trevor Knight and Justin Rackley.

Of the 83 teams, 10 managed to catch their five-fish limits. On the opposite end of the spectrum, 15 teams were unable to land a legal-sized fish, which is a bass of at least 14 inches in length. All anglers commented on catching numerous fish smaller than that throughout the day.

The teams with the most success were mum about what they were doing because the entire field of anglers fishes again tomorrow before being cut to only the top five teams for the last and final day of competition on Saturday. However, some shared that they started the day with one partner casting a topwater bait and the other tossing a crankbait or spinnerbait.

The high blue sky and calm winds sent many searching for different spots, tactics and baits before too long into the morning. The day's fishing turned out to be a slower bite than what many of the anglers said they had experienced during their three practice days of fishing on the lake.

For tomorrow morning, the take-off is expected to begin around 7 a.m. again. The weigh-in starts at 3 p.m. at Sneaky Pete's Marina and is open to the public. On Saturday, the five final teams will fish from special edition 40th anniversary Ranger boats identically equipped with Yamaha outboards, Garmin electronics and Minn Kota trolling motors.

Saturday's weigh-in begins at 3:30 p.m. at Sneaky Pete's.

The NCBFC is sponsored by BoatU.S., BoatU.S. Angler, Cabela's, Ranger Boats, Yamaha, Garmin, Costa Del Mar, Pioneer Beef Jerky, EGO Nets, Sebile, American Rodsmiths, Aviva Fishin’ Buddy, Biosonix, Bill Lewis Lures, Gene Larew Lures, Nemire Lures, Keelshield, Minn Kota, Sperry Top-Sider, Power-Pole, City of Lewisville, Sneaky Pete’s Marina, the Collegiate Bass Anglers Association and Fox College Sports.
