2009 UTC Fall Invitational

UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE
2009 FALL INVITATIONAL RESULTS

University of Tennessee - Chatanooga hosted the UTC Fall Invitational held at Chickamauga Lake, TN on November 14. Twenty eight collegiate anglers representing four Tennessee colleges competed in the weather shortened event. Takeoff was delayed until 8 a.m. due to dense fog which created unsafe conditions. Weigh-in was held at 3 p.m. at Chester Frost Park located in Hixson, TN. It proved to be a pretty tough day out on the water but as always, several of these talented anglers brought 5 bass limits to the scales.

Joey Mallicoat and Mac Jones of Tennessee Tech finished in first place. They caught the majority of their tournament winning limit of bass by fishing a single fifty yard stretch of bluff bank with jerkbaits most of the day. The team also landed the big bass of the tournament (3.61 lbs). "We caught our second biggest fish with ten minutes left in the tournament out on a hump right in front of the boat ramp which bumped us up about a pound," said Mallicoat. That turned out to be the tournament winning fish as Mallicoat and Jones finished with 12.30lbs, almost a full pound ahead of the 2nd place finishers.

Josh Haskins and Seth Davis also of Tennessee Tech came in second place. Josh is the current president of the Tennessee Tech bass fishing team. They caught their limit using a Lucky Craft Sammy as well as a variety of crankbaits and jerkbaits. Davis reported, "The current was rolling that day and we targeted main river current breaks halfway up the lake". Haskins and Davis weighed in 11.36 lbs, .09 lbs ahead of the 3rd place finishers.

Taylor Massingill and Alex Craw of the host school, University of Tennessee - Chatanooga, claimed third place.Craw is the current president of the UTC Bass Anglers and Massingill is the current vice-president.They ran a long distance upriver toward the Watts Bar Dam to start the tournament. After arriving at a slough upriver, Massingill and Craw fished a roughly 75 yard long stretch of bank with the boat sitting in three to five feet of water. They were targeting bass that were actively feeding on shad. "We would wait for the fish to start coming up in a feeding frenzy, then we'd put the trolling motor on high and blast in that direction casting lipless crankbaits, small crankbaits, and topwater lures at them," said Craw. The team caught four keepers this way and left with about an hour left in the tournament. They picked up their last keeper, which was a spotted bass, fishing a shaky head along a rip rap bank. Massingill and Craw‘s limit tipped the scales at 11.27 lbs.
